What is Micro-Needling?

What is Micro-Needling?

Over the past few months, there has been a lot of talk on TV and in social media about micro-needling, but how much of what you’ve heard is really true. Celebrities like Kim Kardashian and Kelly Ripa have had micro-needling treatments on TV and this has attracted the attention of every female, male, and skin loving person alive. Well if you’re reading this that means that YOU too are wondering what the hype is all about.

So what is micro-needling? Why would you have it done? What does it feel like? Is there really that much blood (Kim K. you looked scary!)?

At Coastal Aesthetics Medi-Spa our Nurse Practitioner Kimberlee Smith uses FDA approved Rejeuvapen™ for skin rejuvenation micro-needling treatments along with (preferred) Platelet Rich Plasma or PRP. Micro-Needling is appropriate for almost all skin types and after a complimentary consult, you and Kimberlee can decide if micro-needing is the appropriate treatment for you. Curious to see if you are someone who would qualify, well lets first learn what micro-needling addresses. If you’ve discovered fine lines and wrinkles, sun damage, age spots, or have some hyperpigmentation than you qualify! If you have scarring from trauma or acne, you also qualify! If you desire a youthful glow or just want to have increased tone and texture, then you also qualify! Now that we’ve caught your attention, let’s learn what micro-needling is.

What is Micro-Needling?

Micro-needling (originally termed collagen induction therapy or CIT) is a highly effective, minimally invasive skin rejuvenation treatment option to diminish wrinkles, fine lines, large pores, acne, scarring, and stretch marks, as well as stimulate wound healing and improve skin tone and texture. It can be used on the face, neck, and chest. Micro-needling has minimal downtime (when compared to laser therapy or IPL treatment) and side effects but offers long-lasting results.

What is PRP?

We take micro-needling to the next level by offering micro-needling in combination with PRP or Platelet Rich Plasma. PRP utilizes the body’s own materials to create a serum that increases the growth factors of your skin. The extracted platelets from your blood are associated with the healing process. The PRP solution is applied to your face during the micro-needling treatment as a lubricant, increasing the degree of healing.

What Should I Expect During Treatment?

First, a small amount of blood will be drawn from your arm and spun in a centrifuge to separate your cells into red blood cells, platelets, and plasma creating PRP.  While your blood is undergoing the separation process, we will cleanse your face and prepare it for treatment by applying a topical anesthetic (numbing cream), which will help to diminish any pain that may be experienced during the treatment. Treatment will be performed by our Nurse Practitioner in office and is done with a pen called Rejuvapen. The pen has 6 very fine needles. These needles gently puncture the skin at various depths to create a controlled skin injury, which stimulates the release of growth factors and cytokines. The PRP solution is applied topically to your facial skin at the same time as the micro-needling is performed. After the treatment is completed a specialized ointment will be applied to your face to help aid in the healing process. You will be sent home with a post-procedure kit consisting of 3 topical solutions for combination treatment. The kit has easy to follow instructions explaining when to apply the solutions, which will help you maximize the effects of your treatment.

It’s typical to have some mild redness immediately after treatment but this usually resolves within 24 hours. You will have an instant glow (within hours!) that will make people stop and say, wow, you look fabulous! You’ll then smile, nod and think, I DO look fabulous!
