Everything You Need To Know About Laser Hair Removal

We are so excited to bring laser treatments to Coastal Maine! Among our laser services, we are going to be offering, one of the most popular services, laser hair removal! Everyone wants to have smooth, hairless skin and not have to worry about shaving or plucking, especially with the warmer weather coming back soon!

With a new, popular treatment, many people have so many questions and often feel hesitant to come in for these services because they aren’t sure if they are a candidate for it! The good news with laser hair removal at Coastal is that most people are the perfect candidate! If you are a client with unwanted pigmented hair (not blonde, gray, or white) you may benefit. In general, clients who struggle with in-grown hairs, razor burn, abnormal hair growth (hirsutism/hypertrichosis), time-consuming daily hair maintenance regimens, or for women, hair on the face, all are usually very, very satisfied after receiving laser hair removal.

Most clients require 3 – 6 treatments, at least 6 weeks apart,  to any given area followed by (maybe) a maintenance treatment once a year.

The lasers work by killing hairs that are actively growing at the time of treatment. However, many dormant hairs can also be present during the treatment time and those hairs do not have as much pigment deep in their follicle and ultimately the laser will not affect these hairs during that treatment. All hairs go through this cycle of active growth, dormancy, and regression, which is why multiple sessions may be necessary to catch them all in their active growth phases.

Everyone feels “pain” differently but most people describe it as a fast rubber band snap. We have anesthetic (numbing) cream for certain sensitive areas, which can be applied before your treatment. The good news is most treatments are typically very fast. A bikini line takes about 10 minutes, underarms about 5 minutes and a chin or lip for about 1 minute.

One of the great things about laser hair removal is that it does not interrupt your normal lifestyle. Patients routinely go back to work or their normal activity right after treatment. Clients may feel the need to shave in-between treatments, however, you should never wax or tweeze in-between treatments. Waxing or tweezing will remove the hair from the follicle. The hair contains the pigment that the laser targets for the treatment so, tweezing/waxing hair = no target = canceled appointment 🙁

We are here to answer any questions or concerns you may have about laser hair removal and we invite you to book your complimentary consultation with us to learn more about the treatments and answer any concerns or questions you may have!
