Dermaplaning

What is Dermaplaning?

Dermaplaning is an aesthetic treatment that removes fine vellus hair (peach fuzz) while exfoliating the skin and removing dead skin cells. Dermaplaning is different from dermabrasion, which is a process that uses a high-speed rotating brush to exfoliate the skin. With dermaplaning, an aesthetician or medical professional uses a 1o gauge scalpel to gently scrape off the top layer of dulling dead skin cells to reveal a brighter, smoother complexion.

How does dermaplaning work?

During a dermaplaning treatment, the medical professional will use the scalpel held at a 45-degree angle and apply light, short upward strokes to exfoliate the skin. Because this procedure uses feather-light strokes, there is no worry for pain or piercing of the skin.

While many patients may think this technique looks similar to shaving, dermaplaning is much more effective because the blade offers many additional benefits. When dermaplaning, there is no need to worry about the removed hair growing back darker, as the treatment only targets vellus hair (peach fuzz), which always grows back the same size and color. After your treatment, the medical professional will apply a mask to nourish and enrich your newly revealed skin.

Dermaplaning is a safe and effective exfoliation treatment. Additionally, it promotes deeper product penetration which can boost the effects of your skincare products while also making the skin look and feel smoother. Dermaplaning can also help reduce the appearance of acne scars. The treatment can prevent future breakouts as it removes facial hair that can easily trap dirt and oils and hold them near the skin, leading to acne.

With Dermaplaning

Why is dermaplaning needed?

Your skin is exposed to harsh environmental toxins, irritants, and sun damage each day. This exposure quickly dries out the uppermost layer of your skin and causes your complexion to look dull, which can make your face look aged or tired. Dermaplaning is a safe and effective way to clear away those dry, damaged skin cells, so fresh new skin cells are what you see when you look in the mirror.

Am I a good candidate for dermaplaning?

If you feel like your complexion could use a boost and you’re interested in a safe, non-invasive way to rejuvenate your skin, dermaplaning might be right for you. Fresh, smooth skin also photographs better, and make-up glides on easier. Dermaplaning makes skin look youthful and vibrant.

Dermaplaning is also ideal for highly sensitive skin who may be ineligible for other products or procedures. We also sometimes recommend dermaplaning for our patients who are considering undergoing facials or chemical peel treatments because it will leave their skin perfectly prepped for maximum product penetration and, therefore, better results.

We may recommend dermaplaning to anyone about to undergo a chemical peel or more invasive laser treatments to better penetration and, therefore, provide better results.

FAQs about dermaplaning

There are so many benefits to dermaplaning! Your skin will be freshly but gently exfoliated, and it will remove the small vellus hair, so you’ll enjoy brighter, smoother skin. Your skincare products will absorb more evenly and deeply, giving you the maximum benefit. This treatment can sometimes ease the effects of hyperpigmentation and uneven skin tone, and it’s commonly used to treat deep acne scars. Although results may vary depending on skin, everyone can benefit from dermaplaning.

The best thing you can do to prepare for your dermaplaning appointment is to be gentle on your skin leading up to the appointment. Avoid deep exfoliation for three days before; also, avoid direct sunlight.

Dermaplaning doesn’t require any downtime, and there is no need to let your skin ‘heal.’ A mask is applied to your skin after your procedure to nourish and moisturize it, and sunscreen of at least SPF 30 will be recommended because your skin might be extra sensitive to the sun.

Although most people have little to no irritation or adverse reactions, on rare occasions, side effects may include mild redness and swelling from the scraping or a burning or tingling sensation.

Dermaplaning isn’t recommended if you have an inflammatory skin condition like acne, psoriasis, eczema, rosacea, sunburn. It is best to speak to your medical professional about prescription medications you’re using to treat severe acne.

This treatment starts at $100 and includes a customized mask. If you have any questions about this service or other services we offer, don’t hesitate to contact our office, and our talented medical team can assist you.

Dermaplaning can be done as often as every three to four weeks and we recommend regular maintenance of every 4 weeks to promote healthier skin and to maintain your glowing results.
