Dermal Filler Treatment FAQs

What is dermal filler treatment?

Juvederm is an injectable hyaluronic acid-based dermal filler that is used to correct moderate to severe facial wrinkles and folds. It was FDA-approved for cosmetic use in 2006 and many patients choose Juvederm over the other filler based competitors due to it being less painful and more effective. Juvederm comes in a few different formulations, which have been designed to treat specific areas of the face. Formulations include: Ultra XC, Ultra Plus XC, Volbella XC, Voluma XC, and Vollure.

What are common areas for dermal filler?

Common areas for treatment with filler are areas of volume loss due to aging and the loss of common fat pads. These areas include (but are not limited to): lips, nasolabial folds (laugh lines), marionette lines, cheekbones, temples, and under-eyes.

What Is Juvederm XC And Ultra XC?

Juvederm XC and Ultra XC are both comprised of hyaluronic acid and are a smooth gel used to instantly smooth out fine lines and wrinkles around the mouth and nose along with lip volume enhancement. Results are seen immediately and can last up to 12 months.

So why the two formulations of Juvederm? Good question! Juvederm Ultra XC was designed for versatility in contouring and volumizing facial wrinkles and folds. Juvederm Ultra Plus XC is a more robust formulation for volumizing and improves deeper folds and facial wrinkles. The two formulations allow for a more tailored treatment plan to meet your individualized needs.

How Does Juvederm Work?

Juvederm is comprised of hyaluronic acid (HA). HA is naturally present in the human body, aiding in the process of absorbing and retaining water. When injected into wrinkled or loose skin HA brings instant volume to the area and attracts water molecules slowly over time, which provides sustained lift and tone.

What Is Treatment Like?

Prior to injection, your face will be cleansed and a topical BLT numbing cream is applied to help alleviate any potential discomfort. Our Allergan Master Trained injector Kimberlee uses a blunt-tip microcannula for treatment. This microcannula only makes a small hole, rather than a bunch of tiny ones which is not only more comfortable for the patient but also reduces the risk of bleeding, bruising, and adverse reactions (like infection). This small “hole” allows for the blunt needle to place filler in the appropriate treatment area resulting in a more precise placement of filler. At Coastal Aesthetics we inject with Juvederm for a number of reasons but one highly important reason is comfort. Juvederm is made with lidocaine (a mild anesthetic) drastically reduces the amount of pain experienced during each injection session.

Risks Associated with Juvederm Filler

The most severe complication from fillers is vascular compromise which can occur when an injection of filler material goes into an artery, causing the artery to be blocked and blood flow to an area of the skin to decrease. This decrease in blood flow can lead to death of the skin that the artery supplies.

With the microcannulas that we use at Coastal Aesthetics, the possibility of intravascular injection is essentially zero. Microcannulas require additional training and our master injector Kimberlee has been trained by one of the best microcannula injectors in the country. She has received many additional training hours to further her skills and advance her techniques.

How much do fillers cost?

Pricing is subject to filler used and area treated. We recommend 2 syringes for first-time filler clients.
One syringe is more appropriate for follow-up and repeat.
